Prayer and Communication re. Quebec Secularism
The Quebec government’s Study Committee on Respect for the Principles of the Act Respecting State Secularism and Religious Influences has presented a report to the government recommending broadening the application of secularism in Quebec. Of the 50 measures they are recommending, some, if adopted, would have major harmful consequences for the life and mission of Christian churches and organizations, including:
taxing of places of worship
removing tax exemptions and tax credits for donations to churches
restricting access to public spaces
increased marginalization of faith in the public space
We encourage you to…
1. Pray for…
· the committee behind this report
· the governing bodies who will discern and decide if any of this becomes law
· the Quebec Evangelical Network that represents 18 denominations in Quebec as well as other groups in dialogue with the government right now
· a fresh understanding on the part of our government to see the benefit and impact of churches and other groups in our society; many well researched reports demonstrate that every dollar donated to a church produces 4-10x that in social and economic good
· a resilient yet gracious and Jesus-centered posture from the church
· a renewed commitment from Christians to prayer, the church and mission
· God’s kingdom come and will be done in our province as it is in heaven
2. Communicate:
Our democratic process gives you an opportunity to contact your local MNA or municipal leaders. Most political leaders rarely hear from their constituents, and so if they receive 5 or more messages on the same topic it heightens their awareness of the issue.
